At our memory care community, we’re always looking for meaningful ways to connect with our residents—approaches that go beyond traditional care and create moments of joy, engagement, and calm. One of the most heartwarming and unexpected additions to our community has been chicken therapy.

Yes—real, live chickens.
These gentle creatures have brought a unique kind of magic to our residents' daily lives, offering companionship, stimulation, and even memory recall in ways we never anticipated.
Why Chickens?
When we first introduced chickens to our community, we weren’t sure what to expect. What we discovered was remarkable. Chickens are soothing, nonjudgmental companions. Their soft feathers, gentle clucks, and curious personalities quickly captured the attention—and hearts—of our residents.
For many of our residents, especially those living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, the chickens offer a powerful sensory experience. Stroking feathers, listening to soft clucking, or simply watching them peck and explore brings a calming effect that helps reduce anxiety and restlessness.
Sparking Memories and Conversation
One of the most beautiful aspects of our chicken therapy program is how it awakens memories. Several of our residents grew up on farms or in rural communities, and their interactions with the chickens often trigger fond recollections. We’ve seen firsthand how holding a hen or collecting an egg can spark stories from the past—some that haven’t been told in years.
These moments of reminiscence open the door for conversations among residents, staff, and visiting family members. It's more than therapy—it’s connection.
A Sense of Purpose
The chickens have also become part of our community's daily rhythm. Residents often help with simple tasks like feeding them, checking for eggs, or even naming and caring for their favorite hen. These small activities provide a sense of responsibility and routine, which is incredibly valuable for those experiencing memory loss.
We’ve found that engaging with the chickens gives residents something to look forward to. It’s not uncommon to hear a resident say, “Let’s go check on the girls,” with a smile that lights up the room.

The Impact We've Seen
Since welcoming chickens into our community, we’ve noticed:
Elevated mood and reduced agitation
Increased social interaction between residents
Improved engagement and moments of clarity
More spontaneous smiles, laughter, and storytelling
There’s something very grounding and pure about interacting with animals—especially animals as unassuming and affectionate as chickens. For our residents, the chickens have become more than just visitors—they’re part of the family.
Looking Ahead
We’re thrilled to see how chicken therapy continues to enhance the lives of our residents. It’s a reminder that care doesn’t always have to be complex or clinical. Sometimes, it just takes a few clucks and feathers to make a meaningful difference.
If you visit our community and see residents chatting with chickens or sharing stories from their childhood farms, you’ll understand why we believe so deeply in the power of this experience. Chicken therapy is now a treasured part of daily life here—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
